Growing up in the Bay Area, I started competitive swimming in Elementary School continuing throughout High School. I also did some recreational ocean swimming and surfing. I moved to Zephyr Cove in 1977 when I was hired by Tahoe-Douglas Fire (TDFD) where I competed in power lifting, bodybuilding and mini-triathalons.
In 1980 the Firefighter Health, Safety and Fitness Initiative was launched. I co-coordinated this for TDFD. Included was a series of fitness evaluations that grew and branched off to the FireFighter’s Combat Challenge. We formed up a 5 member team with Tahoe Douglas Fire, South Tahoe Fire and Lake Valley Fire. In 2004, we discovered CrossFit through the Combat Challenge training. I knew shortly that I wanted to continue CrossFit and open up an Affiliate when I retired. In 2006, Tahoe Douglas Fire offered me a retirement package, which I accepted. I applied for an Affiliate and was granted CrossFit Lake Tahoe, which has been serving our community ever since.
I had already discovered my motivation and passion for teaching / coaching as a co-coordinator of the Firefighter Wellness, Safety and Fitness initiative along with teaching Firefighter and Community CPR. Continuing with CrossFit was an easy decision as it was the first and only fitness program relating to real life function and movement along with being the only program to align with athletic training in a broader spectrum.
